UAT's 4-Step Guide To Financial Aid

The process for acquiring various types of financial aid can seem daunting at times, involving multiple applications and required follow-up. That's why it's imperative that you communicate regularly with your UAT Financial Aid Administrator, especially whenever you need assistance with the following steps.

1. Fill Out Your FAFSA Application

FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid for students to submit to determine eligibility for federal loans, grants, and more.

Any student who wishes to receive any form of financial aid must fill out the FAFSA form or download the MyStudentApp on the App Store (iOS) or on Google Play to apply.

Find all the information that is required to fill out your FAFSA and more resources, here. To be considered for federal student aid for the 20242025 school year, you can file your 20242025 FAFSA form now.

To apply for aid for 7/1/25–6/30/26, the 2025–2026 form will be available December 2024.

If you are experiencing any barriers prior to completing your FAFSA, view our Myth vs. Fact resource. If you receive a verification request while your FAFSA is processing, reach out to your advisor for any help needed.

2. Connect With Your Advisor

After you've completed your FAFSA, it's best to schedule a meeting with your UAT Financial Aid Administrator to complete or review your:

  • Financial Aid Plan
  • Financial Aid Eligibility
  • Entrance Counseling
  • Master Promissory Note
    And More

Your Financial Aid advisor will help ensure you're on the right track and provide you with any additional aid opportunities or other loan options to consider. They'll also help you prepare for any ongoing aid that will be needed for semesters in the future.

3. Parent PLUS Application

For students seeking as much financial aid as possible, UAT recommends applying to a Parent PLUS Loan, regardless of whether parents are planning to assist the student with funding.

A Parent PLUS loan application does not bind a parent into a financial liability until they elect in after being approved. The applying parent can decline the awarded loan eligibility.

If the Parent PLUS Loan application is denied, it can raise a student's unsubsidized loan amounts up to $2,000 per semester. For some, this could cover the remaining aid amount a student needs.

After maximum loan amounts have been determined but there is still a remaining balance needing aid coverage, other financial aid options to consider are:

4. Applying for Scholarships

Scholarships are a great opportunity for students because they are awarded funds that do not have to be paid back. There are many different types of scholarships you might qualify for, including:

  • Academic or athletic scholarships.
  • Community service scholarships.
  • Scholarships for hobbies or extracurriculars.
  • Identity or need-based scholarships
  • Employer and military scholarships.
UAT Scholarship Tips

To maximize your success in achieving the number of scholarships for the amounts you desire, it is important to dedicate time to this effort. While it may be potentially achievable to fund all or the majority of your degree expenses with scholarships, it is not an easy task. Therefore, UAT advisors recommend to:

  • Start researching and planning in your junior year.
  • Find scholarships you already qualify for to apply to first.
  • Create a spreadsheet to track all scholarship details and activities.
  • Find other scholarships that you can realistically take on activities or attributes to qualify.

To browse scholarship opportunities, check out our listing of UAT scholarships and our external scholarships resource.
